Bayswater District W2

Bayswater is the name given to the eastern part of the district of Paddington. It is the small area of London that is situated just to the west of Paddington station, from Bayswater road in the south to Westway in the north.

There is some doubt as to the origins of the name, one theory being that it is derived from Ralph Baynard, a close friend of William the Conqueror. But it is more likely that it is derived from the name of the area's main water source Bayard's Watering.

For many centuries the area was undeveloped, the principle reason being that the Tyburn Gallows were located in the district, close to present day Marble Arch. These ensured that for many years the area wasn't considered suitable for residential housing.

It is only since industrialisation that the district has grown into the popular residential district that it is today. It is also home to lots of hotels, and for those looking for budget accommodation Bayswater is a good area to head to for cheap hostels.

Tourist attractions in the area include the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum and the London Toy and Model Museum.
