THE RESORT
Discovering the region
Carnac: a sea-side resort on the Brittany coast nestling in a quiet bay that has always kept its charm. Here you find not only Breton traditions and t
Carnac French Sea Resorthe gracious art of living, but also stunning scenery consisting of gently sloping sandy beaches, fine stretches of water and pretty granite houses scattered among the leafy surroundings.
This spot is the world "capital" of dolmens and menhirs, with at least 3,000 close by.
The Carnac microclimate: Carnac has a particulary mild climate all year round as it is protected by the Quiberon peninsular, and bathed by the Gulf Stream’s secondary currents. From springtime onwards the sun shines more than 7 hours a day, giving Carnac an average of 2,053 hours of sun per year and pleasantly warm temperatures.
Beaches: Carnac’s beaches, perfectly sheltered by the Quiberon peninsular, are famous the world over. Their fine sand, gentle slopes and clear, invigorating water make for beaches that appeal to all the family.
The Grande Plage: bathing and water sports are completely safe here, thanks to a calm sea and 2 km of exceptionally fine white sand facing due south. Légenèse, Ty Bihan and Saint-Colomban beaches lie to the west of the Grande Plage, while Saint-Colomban beach (good for windsurfing) and Beaumer beach lie to the east.
Megaliths
Go and explore the many astonishing menhirs, dolmens and other megalithic sites famous all over the world. There are about 3,000 menhirs in the area around Carnac. The alignments probably played a role in cults, and formed a religious site.
The megalithic sites rose up between 4500 and 2000 BC, during the Neolithic period. There are two special features in megalithic architecture: the alignments of menhirs, and the dolmens and tumuli.
Unusual sights: the Aquarium, Plessis de Kaer Chateau and park, Saint Degan Ecomuseum, the Butterfly Garden, the Insectarium, the Prehistoric museum, the Branfere animal and botanical park, Brittany Prehistoric Park and the Keroman submarine base.
Boat trips around the Gulf of Morbihan, Belle Ile en Mer and Houat.
The surrounding area
The Morbihan has some of the most impressive megalithical sites in the world: the alignments at Carnac, Gavrinis’ Cairn, Locmariaquer’s "Great Broken Menhir" and "Merchants’ Table", Arzon, Er Lannic, Erdeven, Monteneuf’s "Straight Stones" in red shist, and the megaliths of Moustoir Ac, not to mention all the many less famous but equally fascinating examples strewn over the whole region – at a bend in a path, in the shade of a copse, on a heath, or on an island.
Historical heritage: the Chateau of Suscinio; the Route of the Dukes of Brittany with its rich range of mainly military chateaux; the Route des Chouans; Cadoudal’s mausoleum, and the Route of the Mills leading you to a variety of water, tide and wind mills.
Notre-Dame de Quelven in Guern; the motor-cyclists’ Madonna at Porcaro; Notre-Dame du Roncier in Josselin; Le Faouët; Sainte-Anne d'Auray Rochefort-en-Terre; Notre-Dame de la Tronchaye.
Ria d'Etel: a small, wild, mysterious inland sea scattered with islands and islets – a landscape of unusual beauty;
The Gulf of Morbihan with its islands, birds and oyster-farming centre;
Quiberon Bay and the peninsular coast;
Off-shore islands and their picturesque villages;
Old rigging restored or reconstructed using original plans.
