Saint Servan: A green, quiet district of Saint-Malo, Saint-Servan was formerly another town altogether, separated from the ‘pirate city’ by the docks and locks of the port. The town of Saint-Malo in fact originated in this area and then spread out to the neighbouring rock.
Press here to go up to indexSights: the Cité d’Aleth the peninsula where the first inhabitants of Saint-Malo lived; the Promenade de la Corniche (superb panoramic view of the city, Saint-Malo bay and the Rance estuary), St Peters' cathedral, with the remains and foundations of the original Carolingian and Romanesque cathedral. The Eglise Sainte-Croix: rebuilt on several Sea Saint Malo Fench Resortoccasions, the present church was finished in 1743 and its openwork tower completed in 1840. The quality and diversity of its 19th century decor and furnishings make it a place well-worth visiting.
Parc des Corbières: a pleasant coastal stroll in a wooded park with beautiful views over the Rance.
Saint Malo: Saint-Malo ‘Intramuros’ (the walled city of the privateers) is the area that has made the city famous. Its austere-looking granite walls hide a multitude of architectural treasures and museums.
The ramparts: nearly 2 km long, these encircle the city and offer a first glimpse into the world of the privateers. Stretching from the Porte Saint-Vincent to Porte Saint-Thomas, the curtain walls are teeming with history and each one gives a different view of Saint-Malo bay.
The old town: wander through the picturesque streets with names such as Le Chat qui Danse, Le Gras Mollet and Le Pélicot, following the arrow-marked route through Saint-Malo (map available from the Tourist Office). Look out for the old ship owners’ and privateers’ houses as you go along.
St Vincent 's Cathedral: built over nearly 7 centuries, it was finally completed in 1987 and contains a superb collection of contemporary stained glass windows.
Surrounding area:
The Emerald Coast takes its name from the colour of the sea. Visit the Pointe du Grouin nature reserve and the Ferme Marine (oyster farming and shellfish museum) at Cancale, the hydroelectric dam on the Rance, Dinard and Cap Fréhel.
