History
In Medieval times, the Priory of Christi Church ran just
behind what is now called Creechurch Lane (itself a corruption of
"Christi Church". during the disillusion of the Monasteries in the
mid-16th Century, the Priory Church was offered to the parishioners who
could not afford its upkeep (being larger than Westminster Abbey) and who
tore it down and rebuilt a smaller more manageable church on the site.
In 1628, this smaller church was demolished by Archbishop
Lord who rebuilt it as the Church of St. Katherine Cree which was duly
consecrated in 1630 and is now the existing church on Creechurch Lane.
Sir John Gayer, once Lord Mayor of London, is buried inside
the church of St. Katherine Cree and his legacy is remembered to this day by
preaching of the "Lion Sermon" around the 16th October each year,
to commemorate Sir John's deliverance from a close encounter with a lion
once in Arabia,. Being a Royalist, he had concocted a spurious trade mission
to Arabia to avoid his Parliamentarian enemies: taking some merchants along,
he separated from them as soon as he could and awoke on morning to find that
a lion had been circling him as he slept, whereupon he fell to his knees and
prayed in gratitude for his safety. He subsequently returned to England only
to find himself thrown into the Tower by the then Lord Mayor before being
released in response to a public outcry. He died in 1648.
By the turn of the 20th century, several wholesale tea
Merchants had established premises on Creechrch lane particularly the
present block where tea consumers Co. resided until about 1920.
