New York City, East
Village, East 14th Street between First Avenue and
Avenue A.
This is a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with an area
of approximately 700 square feet. The apartment sleeps
up to three people.
On the edge of the very hip, multi-ethnic East village,
this New York apartment is located on the ninth floor of
the building. It is a very solid building with new
windows and very little noise is heard from other
apartments. Luckily, as this one is on the top floor,
there are no noises overhead. There is laundry on the
terrace (T) floor (user must purchase a money card to
operate). The building is secure, with its own very
reliable security force. Visitors can be let in through
a video intercom/code system.
The apartment is very bright with southwest exposure.
From the bedroom one can see downtown Manhattan. The
living room is large and in the shape of an L, and is
decorated artistically. The spacious bedroom is quite
pretty and comfortable, with a queen-size canopy bed,
antique dresser, chest of drawers and a spacious closet
along with a solid brass Victorian-style coat stand. In
the living room, there is a sofa, which becomes a single
bed with the cushions removed. Other furnishings include
a long dining table for up to six people. There is also
stereo record player, plus CD player, TV with cable
channels and HBO and VCR. If you need to use a computer,
please bring your laptop. The kitchen is separate, with
microwave and full-size refrigerator/freezer. There are
pots and pans, and dinner/silverware for four. The
bathroom is comfortable, with hand-painted velvet shower
curtains and antique chandelier, and great shower
pressure and bathtub. Towels and sheets are provided.
This apartment is in the middle of youthful, bustling
East Village with restaurants, bars, nightspots and
eclectic clothing stores on every block; Avenue B is
being called the new Restaurant Row with its influx of
eateries. Just four blocks down is the legendary
Tompkins Square Park, ground zero for the best
people-watching in the Lower East Side. Walk east and
across the 10th Street bridge, you’ll be at the East
River, with recreational parks and scenic path. Walk
west along 14th Street, and in 10 minutes you’ll be at
the famous Trader Joe’s supermarket; a little further
takes you to the hip Union Square, with its chic cafes,
Whole Foods, New York’s biggest farmers’ market, ABC
Carpet and Home store and the famous Union Square Café,
voted by the Zagat Guide as the city’s best eatery.
Public transportation is handy: the cross-town bus that
leads directly to the artsy Chelsea Meatpacking District
and fabulous Chelsea Market is at your door, and the L
train is just a block away. Or, walk to Union Square for
a large variety of trains that go all over the city.
Taxis are everywhere, day or night.
In Emergencies: dial 911; Beth Israel Hospital is around
the corner at 16th Street and First Avenue. For
non-emergency service, Styvesant Town has its own
service department. If you are locked out, security can
let you in: from the lobby dial 100. There is a charge
for the service.
The Lower East
Side
This is New York's landmark historic Jewish
neighbourhood, which was once the world's largest Jewish
community. It was here that the New York garment
industry began. Today it is one of New York's favourite
bargain beats, where serious shoppers find fantastic
bargains (especially along Orchard Street on a Sunday
afternoon), cutting-edge new designers, and hot bars and
music venues - and possibly the best place to get a
great pastrami sandwich, pickles out of a barrel, and
the world's best bialys. Try Katz's Delicatessen (205
East Houston St.), the oldest and largest real NY deli,
founded in 1888.
